Meydan awards multi-million contracts
29. April 2007Meydan today announced at a press conference in Dubai, that National Services Contracting Co.(NSCC) LLC and Al Dhafra Pipeline & Contracting Co (APCC) have won the piling contracts for its new iconic horseracing development through a fiercely-contested tender process.
Laying the foundations for such a landmark enterprise is a pivotal phase in developing the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Work is due to begin on May 1 and is scheduled to be completed in six months.
Both companies are two of the region's leading piling companies, responsible for many famous landmarks in the Middle East.
Meydan Chairman Saeed H Al Tayer said: "We are delighted to be working alongside such well-established companies, who come with excellent reputations and exactly the right pedigrees for a project such as Meydan.
"We revealed Meydan to the world on the eve of the 2007 Dubai World Cup, and work on site began just 48 hours later, which shows how fast this incredibly exciting venture is moving. This is the first major phase of the development, and I am extremely pleased to announce these contracts today.
"Future contract announcements are to be made soon. We have received inquiries from many renowned international and local leading contractors."
Other contracts scheduled to be announced are the Meydan Grandstand main building package, the canal construction package, and other supporting facilities within Meydan Racecourse and Meydan City.
NSCC, which has offices in the UAE and Qatar, was founded in 1968 and is renowned for its innovative techniques, while Abu Dhabi-based APCC was established in 1978, before becoming a national company three years later.
Meydan Racecourse has a target opening for the 2010 Dubai World Cup meeting and will span 76 million square feet. It will feature a world-class grandstand and state-of-the-art dirt and turf tracks, and the enterprise will also serve as a major business and conference district.
In close proximity to Meydan Racecourse, is Meydan City - a self-contained community consisting of commercial and residential plots, retail outlets and arcades with canal, waterfront and promenade views.
Meydan Racecourse and Meydan City are designed by world renowned Malaysian firm Teo A. Khing Design Consultants.
